The Guinness World Records has given the official word that Mackay now holds the record for the World’s largest tap dance lesson with 274 participants  at the Mackay Entertainment and Convention Centre (MECC). The attempt was held on World Tap Dance Day, May 25, 2017.

The free community event was a fun way to ‘brighten spirits’ after the destructive Cyclone Debbie made its way through the Mackay region in March this year. It did just that, with old and young and everyone in between coming along for a fun afternoon, even those with no tap dancing experience and the chance to be a part of history.

The world record attempt required video and photo evidence as well as assorted independent witness statements, and stewards to witness for every 50 attendees.

The record-breaking tap class was presented by the stars of A Fine Romance: The Magic of Fred Astaire including Margaret Fisk, Joe Meldrum, Sage Douglas and Dominic Woodhead and the MECC.
