The launch of NARPACA’s new web site, which offers quick and easy access to essential information about NARPACA and our network of member-venues across Queensland and the Northern Territory, is part of the organisation’s ongoing efforts to enhance the quality and availability of information to members and performing arts professionals worldwide. The web site boasts a modern, functional design and is divided into five sections: About, Membership, News & Events, Resources, Contact. It offers several special features including a member directory, private discussion forum and members-only resources. Integrating with the web site is our new e-newsletter Applause – we hope you enjoy the new format and regular updates.
For the first time in many years, 2015 will see all three of NARPACA’s annual conferences in member-venues across regional Queensland with events to be hosted in Ipswich, Toowoomba and Mackay. Over the last few months, our conference committees have worked behind the scenes to develop superb programmes for each event featuring a line-up of some of Australia’s leading speakers covering a range of member-driven hot topics.
We are thrilled to announce that NARPACA’s application to be listed on the Register of Cultural Organisations (ROCO) was recently approved by the Minister for the Arts and the Assistant Treasurer on behalf of the Treasurer. The NARPACA Public Fund is now eligible to receive tax deductible donations and we can actively seek philanthropic funding for strategic projects. This major step forward for NARPACA would not have been possible without the support, hard work and expertise of the team at McCullough Robertson Lawyers who we thank for so generously donating their services.
By donating, you are helping NARPACA to continue its work fostering a strong network of performing arts centres across Qld/NT to support the development and delivery of quality performing arts experiences to their communities
We welcome members of the inaugural Box Office and Marketing Network (BOMNet) QLD/NT Committee which came into being in August bringing together a mix of ticketing and marketing expertise and experience from across the NARPACA network:
- Robyn Gander, Ticketing & Client Services Manager, QPAC (Chair, BOMNet Committee)
- Helen Oldham, Administration Manager, Empire Theatre Toowoomba
- Kathryn Hamilton, Marketing Co-Ordinator, Cairns Civic Theatre
- Katie Ross, Box Office & Admin Coordinator, Mackay Entertainment Convention Centre
- Stephen Burgess, Townsville Civic Theatre
- Sue-Ann Chapman, Communications and Visitor Services Manager, The Arts Centre Gold Coast
The role of the BOMNet Committee is to oversee the successful delivery of the annual BOMNet Conference, promote member engagement through regular communication and updates and to provide recommendations to the Management Committee on key issues facing the section of the NARPACA membership that the BOMNet Committee represents.
We’d also like to welcome Lisa Stephenson (Brolga Theatre Maryborough) and Rhys Holden (Roundhouse Theatre La Boite) who were recently co-opted to NARPACA’s Management Committee to complement the skills-base of the Committee and expand representation from different sections of the NARPACA membership in terms of region, scale and type of member.
NARPACA has entered into a partnership with leading arts business consultancy, Positive Solutions, to complete an analysis and reporting of benchmarking data from NARPACA member-venues. Members have been asked to provide data on venue infrastructure, finances and utilisation for a 12-month period by 31 December 2014. The report will be distributed to participating members in March 2015.
It was with heavy hearts that we heard of the sudden passing on Monday 4 August 2014 of our much loved and respected colleague and friend John Watson. A true cultural warrior, John will be remembered as much for his passionate belief in the arts and his many talents as a writer, producer, director, dancer, costume and set designer/maker, as for his mischievous nature, glittering eyes and ability to make everyone he met, feel special.
As one of Queensland’s most loved theatre practitioners, a tribute was staged to honour John on 15th of August 2014 at the Queensland Theatre Company's Bille Brown Studio. This special event allowed the community to celebrate and farewell an adored man who touched the heart of all who knew him. During the tribute, John was described as a “true friend and helper, a man of the theatre who was as adept with a sewing machine as he was with a cordless drill”.
John entertained and inspired the lives of thousands through his many and varied creative projects including his work as Producer River Stage & National/Corporate Days World Expo ’88, as writer of Smiley – the Musical (Book & Lyrics) and as co-writer and director of the enormously successful musical Possum Magic which recently celebrated its 25th anniversary and on its last tour, played to over 80,000 people.
John passed away in his sleep the night before he was to commence as Manager of the Moncrieff Entertainment Centre in Bundaberg. He died in the way he lived, excited, brimming with ideas and full of expectation for his new adventure. John is buried in an unmarked grave. Vale John Watson.
