Rockhampton Regional Council has called for tenders for design concepts to transform the Pilbeam Theatre and surrounding area into a world class vibrant performing arts precinct and community space.

The Pilbeam Theatre has stood on its site overlooking the Fitzroy River since 1979 with the Rockhampton Art Gallery currently occupying a building adjacent to the Pilbeam Theatre. Work is now underway on Rockhampton’s new Art Gallery which is being built in the riverside precinct closer to the CBD. The new Art Gallery is scheduled to be opened in late 2021, leaving the old gallery building vacant.

The move provides the Rockhampton Regional Council with an opportunity to think about a strategic future for the current Pilbeam Theatre site as a whole – including the theatre, old gallery building, car park, Quay Lane and the area near the river itself.

As well as creating a modernised state-of-the-art Pilbeam Theatre, there is scope to create stunning public spaces that feed seamlessly into the existing developments further along the river, education and community facilities, and even a conference centre that could bring thousands of people to the region every year.
